We are seeking a motivated and commercially minded Surveyor to join our Rating team. The successful candidate will provide professional advice on business rates for a diverse portfolio of commercial properties, helping clients minimise liabilities, manage risk, and navigate the UK rating system.
The role offers exposure to a wide range of sectors including office, industrial, retail, leisure, logistics, and mixed-use developments, working with both occupiers and investors.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of commercial rating instructions across multiple property sectors.
- Prepare, review, and submit business rates appeals and proposals.
- Analyse rental evidence, valuation data, and market trends to support rating assessments.
- Conduct property inspections and collect relevant valuation information.
- Negotiate with the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) to achieve favourable rating outcomes.
- Advise clients on business rates liabilities, reliefs, exemptions, and mitigation strategies.
- Support clients through the Check, Challenge, Appeal (CCA) process.
- Prepare reports, valuation analyses, and client presentations.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships through proactive communication and high-quality service delivery.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across valuation, agency, lease advisory, and property management teams.
- Monitor legislative and case law developments affecting business rates.
- Assist with business development initiatives and contribute to winning new instructions.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Degree in Real Estate, Estate Management, Surveying, or a related discipline.
- Progressing towards or qualified as a Chartered Surveyor (MRICS), or equivalent relevant experience.
- Experience in commercial property rating or valuation.
- Strong analytical and numerical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to interpret market evidence and valuation information.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
Desirable
- MRICS qualified.
- Experience of negotiating rating appeals with the VOA.
- Knowledge of the Check, Challenge, Appeal process.
- Familiarity with property databases and rating software.
- Existing client relationships or business development experience.
